Customer

An international company headquartered in the Netherlands, focused on developing and supplying innovative
and sustainable solutions in the fields of security and electronic control units, management and information
systems for different types of organizations.
Project overview

Almost all new automobiles produced today are required, by law, to provide an interface from which
test equipment can obtain diagnostic information. The data transfer on these interfaces follow several
standards, but none of them are directly compatible with PCs or PDAs. The scope of the project was to
enable these data transfers between a car and a mobile device in order to provide support to car users.
EXECOM’s task was to allow remote diagnostics for a car via handheld mobile device and to enable Services
personnel to view and control car parameters in near real time.
Execom solution

Regarding the fact that EXECOM is experienced in working with/developing standard and proprietary
protocols and standards, the company was chosen to develop the required application. The goal for
EXECOM team was to deliver an efficient and reliable solution: mobile device application on Symbian
platform for mobile phone.
The system architecture considered communication between the device and web clients through server.
The first communication channel to set up was the Bluetooth communication with external device via
RFCOM protocol. Afterwards, the development team implemented communication from mobile device to web
server using GPRS and http protocols, enabling fast data transfers. Therefore, once the mobile device
receives the diagnostic info from a car via Bluetooth, the user can send info to Service personnel
through a Web client. By having these functionalities implemented, Service personnel is able to
respond in near real time and provide necessary support.
Benefits

The chance to work with mobile devices and Symbian operating system was a challenge for EXECOM, but
also a great opportunity to conduct R&D process in such significant business area. The project helped
both EXECOM and the Client:
- Deliver a highly usable software solution;
- Gain more experience and knowledge in the business area ;
- Set up cooperation between highly skilled and trained pool of employees;
- Reduce costs by outsourcing all development activities.
